Adapting books for television with Adrian Hodges
comented/adapted for the blog by Roman Bruni.
“What kind of books make good television ?” asks Adrian, his answer is that
books are an immagination medium, the reader has a unique relation with the storyteller and its characters. Tv, is a literal medium, imposing ready images over the spectator.
Books may explore the interior live of a character, while Tv may not.
Books are much longer than Tv scripts, using pages and time to demonstrate arguments
wich in television drama need to be told in a neutral fashion from a neutral observer.
The narrator in a book can be overly involved into the action, but whenever the camera
gets emotional, the spectator may experience difficulties and attention disorders.
TV depends upon rhythm, intrigue, action and a lot of incidents and obstacles.
Great Tv depends heavily upon its characters - not only visually,
Great Books may get away famous only with lots of intrigue and twists, for they can be read very quicky - getting from A to B - firing lots of data and information to be absorbed
upon each page. Television is a medium where details demand extensive camera work.
So, the first major effort into adaptation of stories lie in the choice of wich story to adapt.
